If you spend your working day sitting at a computer, the chances are you’ve experienced back or neck pain at some point. It’s one of the most common complaints we see at Diversity Chiropractic and the good news is that in most cases, it’s very treatable.
Why Desk Work Causes Pain
The human body isn’t designed to sit still for hours at a time. When we sit with poor posture, certain muscles become overworked and tighten while others weaken and switch off. Over time, this creates imbalances that put stress on the joints and discs of the spine, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced movement.
Common problem areas include the lower back (from slumping or arching), the upper back and shoulders (from hunching forward toward a screen) and the neck (from holding the head forward, a position known as tech neck).
Quick Fixes That Actually Help
A few simple changes can make a significant difference:
- Check your screen height. Your monitor should be at eye level so your head isn’t tilted up or down.
- Move regularly. Set a timer to get up and move every 30 to 45 minutes. Even a short walk to the kitchen counts.
- Check your chair. Your feet should be flat on the floor, knees at roughly 90 degrees, and your lower back supported.
- Strengthen your core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the load on passive structures like discs and ligaments.
